2010
The New Year is truly underway and already it is making a mark on us. A questions that deserves to by asked by each of us is, “am I making a mark on my year?”.
Most people name their year after it is ended; our Queen famously named 1992 as her “annus horribilis” due to the happenings it thrust upon her. Yet we can name our year before it has begun and, whilst not being able to control many of its events, we can plot its course.
In this new year talk I set out the main priority in 2010 for New Life (Scunthorpe) and encourage people to realise 2010 as the year where they do their best; to name it as “my best year”.
If you want to discover how to cause a significant upturn in your ability to become all that creator God wants you to be, then listen to this podcast and follow along with the powerpoint if you wish.
God bless you and thanks for visiting therevster.com

A couple of years ago I saw a young man walking towards me wearing a t-shirt that said on the front “Done watching”. After he’d passed me I caught sight of the back of his shirt which said “Doing”. I thought this was such a powerful message that I wrote it down in my file for possible useful anecdotes.
When I came to prepare a talk about the importance of Christian believers being practictioners of God’s word rather than just hearers (or even just students) the image of this t-shirt suddenly became relevant.
If you want to know how to have a strong unshakeable faith and emerge out of any storm strong and secure with even greater blessing in store; then you need to hear the principles contained in this short talk.
Join the great family of New Life as we met together at our Sunday celebration at The House in Scunthorpe.

Have you ever been in prison? OK you don’t have to bare your soul and perhaps your chequered history in the comments section, but maybe you’ve been in prison in a different way. Maybe imprisoned by fear, loneliness, trapped in a relationship or bound in a cycle of addiction. If so then then this podcast is just for you and may just help you turn the key in your prison door enough to see the first glimmer of hope and light bursting through.
“Unchained melody” is the first in a series of six talks based on the biblical letter to the Ephesians and will help you become a bigger person, big on the inside.
This was also my first sermon since the news of Michael Jackson’s death, so as a homage and to keep those who enjoy their sermons “lite” happy I have inserted over 10 of MJ’s song titles throughout my talk. See how many you can spot.
God bless you as you join the believers of New Life Church who are gathered at The House to hear this message.

This coming Sunday I will be launching a new teaching series aimed at helping people become “big on the inside”. Each of the six sessions will be based on one of the chapters of Paul’s letter to the church in Ephesus and I know it is going to be so helpful to all who hear it.
If you’ve ever felt trapped and limited in expressing yourself or your faith then the first session is for you, called “Unchained melody” it will give you keys to unlocking the constraints that the enemy and life places on you.
For those of you who like a bit of lightness in church, as a recognition of recent events I will be dropping in song titles performed by Michael Jackson throughout the talk. See how many you can spot!

What a great time we had at The House on Sunday morning as New Life did church together. It was somewhat emotive too. Fathers were honoured and it was exciting to see a young student speak very highly of his exceptionally humble dad and then pray for him in front of the whole congregation. Later one of our more senior members read the Rudyard Kipling poem “If” and I for one was moved to tears as he neared the climax of that most wonderful of verse.
The message, “A Father’s Advice” centred on the Godly advice spoken through a wise man in Proverbs 3:5-6. I suppose if the Holy Spirit inspires the wisest King who ever lived to pen words to his son, we should at least take careful note; and perhaps more so on Father’s Day.
This podcast then drops in on the message after I’ve finished the preamble which included reminiscences of my own father and his words of wisdom.

WRITTEN FOR LOCAL NEWSPAPER:
Just this week I heard an item on a radio program where a broadcaster and a couple of professors of medicine were discussing human free-will. As part of the discussion they touched on the human mind and made it clear that they viewed it as no different from the brain. In fact they eliminated any possibility of a mind, soul or spirit and they truly believed that there was no sense of “being you” apart from the bag of flesh & proteins that make up your brain. I bet they’re the life of the party! As expected, I disagree with them and just wish I had opportunity to convince them to change their … bundle of neurons!
The Bible places great emphasis on us discovering our full identity. At this time of economic and social turmoil many readers will be glad to know that their identity is far greater than the value of skin, bone and material things. To find hope and inspiration for your mind and life for your spirit then why not get pop your body down to church this weekend. Each week I’m there I find hundreds of joyful and hope-filled ordinary people from all walks of life who know there is much more to life than meets the eye.
