Breathe and Eat

Breathe and Eat

Last week I took a little time trying to help a few people get to grips with their relationship with the bible. We chatted about the difference between reading scripture devotionally and doctrinally (for encouragement and enlightenment – if you prefer). Both of these practices have a habit of becoming far too mechanical. Our aim was to recover some of the organic nature of our relationship with the bible whilst ensuring we continued to read it in both ways. This poem emerged following the discussion.

Breathe and eat.

Lord help me take the time
To breathe
Just one slow sure breath of your Word
Keeps me alive
Like oxygen for the soul
It changes my now
Encouraging my heart
To work out its call
Til I need breath once more.

Lord help me take time
To dine
A greedy chew of Your Word
Satisfies my mind
Like food for my thoughts
And energy for my search
Then enlightenment comes
And with it I’m nourished.
Til I need eat again.
